The Kingston Arms Freehouse

A.K.A. The Haslop Arms.

Street directories (www.historicaldirectories.org), dating from 1878 onwards shows the pub is listed as 'The Haslop Arms' in 1887.  It seems James Haslop took over the Kingston Arms and under his watch he renamed it the Haslop Arms, and it was returned back to it's original name when James Haslop sold it on.

About 'Miser Kingston'...

Apparently a local landlord named Thomas Kingston bought the land the Kingston Arms sits on, and built the pub and certain blocks of housing on Kingston Street.

He lived in River House in Sleaford Street nearby, and was by all accounts, a recluse and hoarded his money. He had a long beard, wore shabby clothes and slippers, and was known locally as 'Miser'

Kingston (although he did build and furnish the original St Philip's Church in Romsey). And he was accused of watering down farm workers' ale to make it go further!

All the above has been paraphrased from information very kindly supplied by Tom (Kingston Street resident). Again, we'd like more information, specific dates, etc. If anyone can illuminate us, please do.

The Kingston Arms Freehouse, approx 1990.

In-between the second and third upper windows can be seen the old mounting points of a  swing sign, and on the brick work is an old painted sign/logo. The letters 'B' & 'T' are just about visible.

Faint B & T Sign

It seems the B&T sign refers to Bailey  & Tebbutt Ltd.

Bailey & Tebbutt, acquired The Panton Brewery, and started brewing in March 1918. They were taken over by Greene King in 1925. The brewery was later demolished in 1969. The iron gates in Panton street still remain (information kindly supplied by Mike, Banks & Taylor).
